Free Agent Frenzy Predictions

I found this fun little thing on MLB.com, where if you predict where these free agents will go, you can win baseball tickets.

To be honest, I really have no clue for a number of these picks (i.e. just random guesses), however I put Burnett re-signing with the Jays as my pick with the most confidence.  Wishful thinking I guess.  I’m banking on the Yankees landing both Sabathia and Teixeira as their big free agent splash of the offseason, that everyone is predicting they will make.  To me, I can’t see how Manny would choose another team than the Dodgers, given his acceptance with that team this year.

The rest are just random predictions, like Lowe and Abreu going back to their former teams Boston and Philly.  I don’t know where that came from?  Don’t take me as a source on this, check out http://hotstove.mlblogs.com/ and http://allbaseballallthetime.mlblogs.com/ for that.  Those guys are very good on the free agent beat!

This is a fun promotion, however, and you never know?  Maybe some of these random guesses might work out!

    Hey man,

I did the same thing and guessed Burnett to the Yankees. Sorry, wish it wouldn’t happen, but… yeah.

Tried to find an e-mail address for you and struck out. Could you drop me a line at evanATmvn.com? I have a question I’d like to ask you. Thanks!

    Thanks for commenting Evan,

Its true. I would be pretty upset if Burnett jumps to the Yankees. Similar to way I was upset when the Jays unloaded Roger Clemens to the Yankees for David Wells, Grame Lloyd and Homer Bush (sidenote: we could have had Soriano).

I think everyone is predicting a Blue Jay decline without Burnett in the rotation next year. Hard to argue against it!

While is it hard to imagine the Jays doing well without Burnett in the starting five, I believe it is in fact more difficult to imagine them doing well with him there. Signing Burnett, which would cost us at least 16-18 million a season, would cripple Riccardi’s chances at signing players to fill other trouble spots. The better solution; going a little cheaper on another starting pitcher (who, I must add, may perform better than the oft injured Burnett) and adding depth at SS or a quality bat.

Great reference to one of my favorite Simpson’s episodes btw.

    Thanks for the comment!

The thing that made the Jays so dangerous late last season was their front-end pitching. I really liked what Burnett did. I know his career has been very inconsistant (i.e. either he is on, or off), but last season he really looked like he was finding his stuff and with more consistancy. You see the stuff that he has, and Wow! Sometimes it looks like he can be the best pitcher in the league, just completely unhittable, tallying up the K’s. Devastating curve and a 95plus, plus fastball when he needs it. Marcum’s injury also makes him opting more gloomy.

I really liked him and I really like the idea of the Jays having the top front end pitching in the American League. I know the Jays have struggled finding bats all season, but I’m of the school where you will take good pitching over good hitting. Thats just me.

I hope you are right, and Burnett can be somewhat replaced, but I see a lot of questions in the Jays rotation right now.

Watch he gets injured opening day for his new team! LOL I wouldn’t rule it out.

If the Phillies let Burrell go, don’t even make a consideration for either Manny or Holliday and bring back ABREU, I am going down to broad street and raising hell.

Teixeira and Sabathia to the Yankees would make sense given the Yankees past of signing all the best free agents and worrying about how they fit later, but how long has it been since that worked? NEVER! The Yanks won championships when they were a team, not a collection of former and/or potential all-stars wearing the same uniform. Jeter and Rivera are the only Yankees left. I don’t know who everyone else is playing for but they must think the NY on their hat stands for ‘Next Year’s salary’ because that’s all they seem to play for.

Not that I’m biased or anything (because I totally am) I think Manny and Burnett make good fits in Philly. There’s a gaping hole in left and in the lineup left by Burrell who probably won’t resign and they could use a solid #2 starter behind Hamels. Probably wishful thinking like you, but it seems to work great. In the past Philly was never seen as a place to go win championships, now it is. Maybe now we’re on the radar and Amaro needs to make a statement move. How about 4 years/120m to Manny?

Like I said, I wasn’t feeling too analytical at the time, I just through out some random predictions. I only put 4 and 5 confidence points on Burrell and Abreu, the whole thing wasn’t played very well I must admit. I was just giving attention to the MLB promotion that was kinda fun.

I remember when the Jays won the Series in 1992 and were able to retool amazingly to win again in 1993 (sorry, I know). We picked up Ricky Henderson, Paul Molitor, and Dave Stewart all for ’93. Those guys were premier players that wanted to come to a winner! Guess who the GM was? You know, Pat Gillick. I wouldn’t at all be suprised if the Phils could duplicate their year because of that man!
